Capital Gains arising from the transfer of capital assets (e.g. shares, stocks, immovable property, etc.) are liable to capital gains tax. The length of time of holding of an asset determines whether the gain is short term or long term. Capital gains are classified into short-term capital gains (not more than12 months for shares/ securities, and not more than 36 months for other assets) and long-term capital gains.
